The future of this workplace is being decided right now. You deserve a voice in it.

Last week, Unifor issued a press release calling on WestJet to stop outsourcing Canadian jobs and respect the workers who built this airline. That message was heard clearly by the public, by government, and by the company.

Since then, we’ve held four successful meetings, both in-person and virtual. The turnout was strong, the discussions were honest, and one thing was clear: workers are ready for change.

We continue to hear from new people every day asking how joining the union works, what the federal freeze means, and how Unifor can help protect jobs for the long term. The momentum is building and workers are paying attention.

Recent Workplace Concerns

Over the past few weeks, more and more workers have been called into discipline meetings tied to the L.I.F.T. program. The pattern is the same every time:

  • Workers walk in anxious, unsure what they are being accused of
  • There is no clear explanation and no fairness
  • Workers sit alone without representation
  • The CCEA reps remain silent

No one should be walking into a disciplinary meeting alone or in fear. This is not what accountability looks like. It is what control looks like.

What Could Change With a Union

In our Air Canada agreements, KPIs cannot be used for discipline. If a manager listens to a call, it can only be used for coaching and support, not punishment.

That didn’t happen by goodwill. It happened because workers organized together and negotiated enforceable protections.

Imagine working without the constant fear of being called into a meeting. Imagine knowing the rules are clear, fair, and enforceable. That is what collective bargaining provides.

The Reality

  • If nothing changes, none of this stops.
  • The outsourcing continues.
  • The monitoring continues.
  • The discipline meetings continue.
  • The uncertainty continues.

WestJet will not change direction on its own, especially during outsourcing and ahead of an IPO.

Where We Go From Here

We are closer than ever to the support needed to file. But we get there together.

Here’s what you can do this week:

  • Talk to a co-worker
  • Share information
  • Invite someone to the next meeting
  • Join the WhatsApp group or the Unifor in Teal Facebook page
  • Sign a card if you haven’t yet
  • Help someone else sign if they’re ready

This organizing drive is already proving one thing: workers are not powerless when they act together.

A Question for Everyone Reading This:

What will you commit to this week to protect your job and help build a better workplace?
