We are reaching out to you because you previously showed support for joining Unifor, and we wanted to provide an update and reconnect.

As many of you know, last May Unifor filed an application with the Canada Industrial Relations Board to represent workers at WestJet mainline performing work as Crew Schedulers.

That application has been delayed as a result of the employer’s position that both mainline and Encore Crew Schedulers are employed by the same employer and should be included in a single bargaining unit. Unifor has taken the position that mainline Crew Schedulers have a clear community of interest on their own and that mainline and Encore operate as distinct groups.

We are currently awaiting a decision from the Canada Industrial Relations Board. The Board may certify the group as applied for, or it may direct a vote of a larger group of Crew Schedulers.

Within the Operations Control Centre, we previously came close to achieving majority support with the Operations Coordinators group, but did not reach the threshold required at that time.

We are now hearing from many of you again about re engaging with the union drive, particularly given the ongoing uncertainty at WestJet, including recent cuts and continued management changes.

These developments highlight the importance of workers who do not have a current application before the Board coming together in the Operations Control Centre. Employees performing different roles within the OCC share common concerns around job security, compensation, scheduling, and respect in the workplace. There is strength in moving forward collectively.
