Unifor is continuing to build the supports for WestJet frontline airport workers in their effort to form a union and gain a voice in the workplace.

Over the past few weeks, more WestJetters have joined inside committees, new Organizing staff has come on board, and more Unifor member organizers have joined the effort.

Forming a union in your workplace can seem like a daunting task at first. The team of Organizers and Unifor member organizers in airports across Canada is there to help you with any questions you might have or any resources you need. Off-site meetings for WestJet workers have been held across Canada, with more in the works.

Excitement is building as we see pilots, members of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), negotiate their first collective agreement, and flight attendants, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), prepare for their own negotiations.

These workers, along with dispatchers who have joined the Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA), now have a voice in the workplace.

“We needed to be able to speak with one voice and be heard,” David Colquhoun, a WestJet pilot and chairman of the ALPA master executive council told the Globe and Mail. A spokesperson for CUPE told the Globe that no one event pushed flight attendants to unionize, but an accumulation of issues and changes over the years.

Having such a voice is the first union advantage that WestJet frontline airport workers are working hard to achieve. With that voice can come more union advantages through a collective agreement, as the Unifor member organizers helping with this campaign already know. Their collective agreement, for instance, sets out rules for scheduling based on the principles of predictability, flexibility and fairness.

Good jobs begin with the union advantage that comes with a collective agreement. The Organizers and Air Canada workers in the airports are there to help you. Talk to them, attend one of the meetings or reach out to one of your organizers listed below, and make sure your voice is heard.
