WestJet has always been a company with a proud history. From its early days, it built a reputation on Western Hospitality, on neighbours looking out for neighbours, and on treating people with care.

But since the purchase by Onex, we’ve all seen changes. Outsourcing jobs, like shifting Canadian Contact Centre work to El Salvador chips away at what made WestJet special. The best way to fight for the parts of this company you’ve always loved is by standing together and securing a collective agreement that protects good Canadian jobs.

Western Hospitality isn’t just about smiling for guests. It’s about looking out for one another. And now, sticking up for your co-workers and standing united is how we keep those values alive.

How Joining the Union Works

Step 1. Signing Your Membership Card

  • Workers first sign up for Unifor updates.

  • You then receive an email redirecting you to a webpage to complete a secure Adobe membership form.

  • Fill in your info, sign and date, and pay the $5 fee (required by law).

  • Adobe will send you an email — you must confirm your email to finish the process.

  • Once confirmed, a Unifor organizer will countersign, and you’ll get a completed copy with your membership card and audit trail.

Step 2. Filing for Certification

  • Once enough workers sign, Unifor applies to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).

  • With majority support, the union can be certified automatically.

  • With between 35% and 50% support, the CIRB orders a secret-ballot vote.

Step 3. Voting for Your Union

  • If it comes to a vote, you win with a simple majority: 50% plus one.

  • Once certified, WestJet is legally obligated to recognize your union.

Step 4. Electing Your Representatives

  • After certification, you’ll be assigned to a Unifor local that supports your workplace.

  • Workers elect their representatives, starting with your bargaining committee — your coworkers chosen to lead negotiations with full Unifor backing.

Step 5. Bargaining Your First Contract

  • Your bargaining committee begins negotiations with WestJet on wages, benefits, scheduling, job security, and more.

  • Once a tentative agreement is reached, all workers vote on it.

  • No dues are paid until you ratify your first collective agreement.

Step 6. Living Your Union

  • As a Unifor member, you are the union.

  • Members elect representatives, enforce the contract, and have support from Unifor’s staff, legal team, and national resources.

  • With a collective agreement in place, management is legally bound to the terms you vote to accept.

WestJetters, the time is now to stand together. The best way to protect the jobs, wages, and values you care about is with a union. With Unifor, you don’t just get a voice — you get enforceable power to keep WestJet a place you’re proud to work.

Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient Contact Centre — and protect good Canadian jobs for the future.
