As we continue our journey to bring the benefits of unionization to WestJet workers, I want to share some insights into what collective bargaining with Unifor can mean for each of you—whether you’re part of the Contact Centre Employees Association (CCEA), the Technical and Professional Services Employee Association (TAPS), the Airline Employee Association (AEA), or any of the groups we’re organizing.
Our Success So Far:
The success of WestJet Customer Service Agents in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver with their first contract is a testament to the power of collective bargaining. This contract includes fairer wages, stronger workplace protections, and a structured process for resolving issues—all driven by the voices of the workers themselves. These gains show what’s possible when workers come together and negotiate as one.
What This Means for CCEA, TAPS, and AEA Members:
For each of the groups we’re currently organizing—the Edmonton airport team, the Calgary-based Contact Centre, the Calgary IT department, TAPS and the Operations Control Centre in Calgary—joining Unifor means being part of a larger movement that amplifies your voice across WestJet.
Unifor’s ongoing efforts focus on expanding representation across WestJet, strengthening your bargaining power in unity with other departments.
Update for Ramp Service Agents:
We’re currently awaiting a decision from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) regarding the inclusion of ramp service agents in our certification. Both parties have provided additional submissions to the Board, and we understand that this process has been delayed. We’re hopeful for a decision in the coming weeks and appreciate your patience as we await the outcome.
Increasing Density, Increasing Power:
Union density directly impacts the strength at the bargaining table. When more WestJet workers across departments are part of Unifor, we can drive improvements that benefit everyone, making demands more difficult to ignore. By standing together, whether in Edmonton or Calgary, you’re building a unified voice that can push for fair treatment across the board.
Outsourcing Concerns with Telus Digital and Onex’s Outsourcing History:
Recently, news emerged about WestJet contracting out work to Telus Digital in El Salvador. This development raises concerns, especially given Onex’s known history of outsourcing as a cost-cutting strategy. As WestJet’s owners, Onex has prioritized reducing costs by outsourcing jobs, which poses a risk to the job security of WestJet workers. By strengthening your union presence, you can better protect your roles and advocate for fair treatment amid these changes.
Unifor’s Commitment to You:
Unifor is here to support each group’s unique needs, from Edmonton’s Customer Service team to the specialized departments in Calgary under CCEA, TAPS and AEA. Just as we have with customer service agents in other cities, we’re committed to securing contracts that reflect the priorities of each group and uphold the rights of every worker.
Reminder: Membership Card Updates
If you signed your membership card more than six months ago, please remember that you’ll need to update your card to ensure it’s current. Additionally, if you did not complete the second step—filling in the Adobe digital membership form and paying the $5 fee, as required by law—your membership is not yet complete.
If you’re unsure about your status or need assistance with any step, please connect with an organizer to confirm your membership. We’re here to help you every step of the way.
Together, you’re stronger. By joining Unifor, you’re contributing to a movement that ensures every WestJet worker has a fair voice and a strong advocate at the table.
