Stronger Together: WestJet Workers from Unifor 531 Standing With You

We’ve received an important letter of support from WestJet members who are part of Unifor Local 531. These are your coworkers at the airports in Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto who successfully organized with Unifor and their message matters.
When they were organizing, Onex/WestJet was outsourcing airport jobs in the same way Contact Centre jobs are being outsourced today. At that time, the internal association (AEA) did nothing to protect airport workers, just as the CCEA is standing by now while Contact Centre work is offshored.
Local 531 members want you to know that despite those challenges, they pushed through, built majority support, and won certification. Today they’re bargaining stronger contracts that protect their jobs and working conditions. Their experience shows the power of standing together and not letting management divide or discourage workers.
The struggles and challenges you are facing now are not new—they’re the same tactics Onex/WestJet used before. The difference is that with Unifor, workers have the power and legal right to bargain enforceable protections against outsourcing and to fight for better job security.
You can read their message of solidarity here:
Stronger Together: What We Have Achieved and What We Are Protecting
This is a reminder that you’re not alone in this fight. Other WestJet workers have been where you are now, and together, they showed it can be done.
