Unifor YYZ Bargaining Committee Update Letter NO.2  October 20th, 2022

Hello YYZ,

Before we provide a full update, we would like to address the current issue around the Bid Release tech glitch.

Unifor has been informed, and we are actively communicating with WestJet to find out all details and determine our next steps. As we continue to communicate with WestJet, we ask for your patience and, more importantly, any feedback you would like to provide. We know this situation has brought forward a lot of concern, and we are with you every step of the way, ensuring your voice is heard.

Since our last update on Sept 20th, the Bargaining Committee has had the opportunity  to attend a 3-day intensive online training for New Units: including Representation, Grievance Handling, Workplace Harassment and Violence, Collective Bargaining and much more. It was quite the learning experience and is only a start to how our union presence and training will help empower our membership and address your concerns.

In addition to ensuring we have the tools to support you, we are actively reviewing all aspects of team requests and needs to ensure we are presenting an accurate proposal once we begin negotiations. This is a detailed and lengthy process, but we thank you for your unwavering support and patience as we continue.

For clarity, any and all communications will not be sent out via your @westjet.com internal email. All Unifor communication will be sent directly to your personal email, as provided to Unifor. In fact, [email protected] is where you can address your needs and/or concerns.

The Bargaining Committee representing you is Erica Kelly (CSA), Keaton Cole (GSL), and Maria-Jose Bouey (CSA) until we reach an agreement with WestJet. In the absence of a collective agreement, we are protected under the Federal Freeze Provision, which requires that all terms and conditions of employment are “frozen” and can not be changed without the union’s consent.

That means nothing can be changed with policies and procedures until we reach a collective agreement unless previously announced by WestJet or due to the ordinary course of operations.

We appreciate your efforts in coming to work and giving your best, and we will do the same on the back end in creating a better workplace for all. We ask for your patience in the meantime, as this is a working process and new territory for everyone involved.

Please note that during the week of Oct 24th, we will not be on YYZ premises. However, we will still be accessible via email at [email protected], as we head back to the table with Unifor reps tackling more business surrounding bargaining proposals and the next steps forward.

We thank you for your unwavering support and patience!

Warmly,

The YYZ Bargaining Committee
Erica Kelly, Keaton Cole, Maria-Jose Bouey

****** Ramp Leads are included in our certification and bargaining in Toronto however Ramp Agents are not part of the union at this point. They have been signing cards to gain a majority of support but they require more cards at this point. If you have a conversation with a Ramp Agent let them know they can sign a Unifor membership card here: join.unifor.org/WestJet
