This is an exciting day. Thanks to your incredible efforts, you have built the majority support required for Unifor to apply to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to represent WestJetters at YYZ.
Many of you have been anxiously waiting to join your colleagues in Calgary and Vancouver as members of Unifor - we are pleased to inform you that your time for change is now!
You will join more than 16,000 workers across the air transportation industry, including customer service agents, pilots, ground handlers and air traffic controllers who already benefit from their Unifor membership and have bargained strong collective agreements through their elected representatives.
What are the legal requirements for certification?
When the union files an Application for Certification with the support of the majority of the employees in a workplace, the board, after conducting its normal process, would certify the union as the bargaining agent in that workplace.
Over the next few weeks, Unifor will keep you updated as we hear from the Labour Board.
What will happen to my wages and benefits?
Once the union applies for certification, workers are covered under the Federal Freeze provision Section 24(4) of the Canadian Labour Code (CLC). The freeze provision ensures that an employer cannot alter workers’ terms and conditions during this period without your consent. Once you have a union, any changes to your working conditions are subject to approval by you and your coworkers. In other words, you get the final say!
