The Canada Transportation Act recently underwent a review which has left the air transport sector in a state of limbo. Many recommendations are geared towards further privatization and deregulation of Canada’s air transportation industry.
These reforms include increased foreign ownership, which will pave the way for even more low cost carriers into the Canadian market. While this may reduce costs for travellers in the short run, evidence suggests it will also reduce the quality of air travel and customer service in the long run. A collective agreement, or contract, is a legally-binding agreement between a union and an employer. It covers wages, hours of work, working conditions, benefits, rights of workers and the union, and a procedure to be followed in settling workplace disputes.
