The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has granted an interim certification to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) as the union for flight attendants at WestJet. They join 12,000 flight attendants who are already members of CUPE. Flight attendants with Encore and Swoop continue to sign union membership cards.
This follows the pilots at WestJet officially joining the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) earlier this year – becoming part of the largest pilot union in the world, representing more than 60,000 pilots across Canada and the United States. WestJet and the pilots agreed in May to a settlement process to reach their first contract through mediation.
With more in-flight employees now enjoying the union advantage, it’s time customer service agents, guest service ambassadors and baggage handlers ensure that they also have a voice during this time of change at WestJet. As a Unifor member, you will gain a say in your workplace, and a chance to negotiate a fair contract that ensures better working conditions.
Stay informed, and let your co-workers know they too can benefit from talking to a Unifor organizer. For more information, feel free to contact me at: [email protected] or (cell) 416-605-1443.
