Why Wait to Be Let Down Again?

Cards Are Coming In Again

Over the last little while, we've seen something encouraging happening in both Edmonton and Winnipeg:

WestJet employees are signing Unifor membership cards again.

And we've noticed a pattern.

Typically, something happens in the workplace. Employees don't feel they're being treated fairly. Management doesn't address the concern, or employees don't feel the AEA has effectively represented them.

Then our phones start ringing.

Emails and messages come in.

And more WestJet employees sign Unifor cards.

We understand why.

But we also want to ask an important question:

Why wait until you're disappointed again?

If you believe employees need a stronger voice at WestJet, you don't have to wait for the next issue, the next management decision or the next time you feel your concerns aren't being heard.

You can set your own agenda.

That's what collective bargaining is about.

Sit Across the Table as Equals

With Unifor, employees don't simply ask WestJet to make things better.

You organize together and gain the legal right to bargain collectively with WestJet.

Your coworkers elect your bargaining committee.

Employees determine their bargaining priorities.

Your committee sits across the table from WestJet and negotiates a collective agreement covering the issues that matter to you.

That could include:

✔ Wages and guaranteed increases

✔ Scheduling and hours of work

✔ Benefits

✔ Job security

✔ Contracting out protections

✔ Seniority

✔ Job postings

✔ Vacation

✔ Overtime

✔ Discipline and representation

✔ A grievance and arbitration process to enforce your agreement

The priorities aren't decided by WestJet.

They're not decided by the AEA.

They're decided by you and your coworkers.

Fairness Shouldn't Depend on Management Agreeing With You

There's an important difference between having a workplace concern and having the collective power to do something about it.

Without a union, employees can raise concerns and ask management to respond.

With Unifor, employees have the legal right to negotiate workplace rules with WestJet and put those rules into a binding collective agreement.

That's a very different relationship.

It's about meeting WestJet at the bargaining table as equals and negotiating the terms and conditions of your employment together.

Don't Wait for the Next Issue

We've seen support grow before.

Then things quiet down.

Cards expire.

And eventually another issue comes along and employees start asking about Unifor again.

We don't need to keep repeating that cycle.

If you want a real voice in your workplace, now is the time to build it.

If you've previously signed a Unifor membership card, remember that cards don't last forever. You may need to sign a new card to make sure your support is current.

And if you've never signed before, we invite you to join the growing number of your coworkers who are doing so now.

Your decision to sign is confidential.
