YEG WestJet Workers Get the Facts. Know Your Rights. Build the Future Together.
Unifor is on the ground at YEG to ensure that every WestJet worker has access to clear, accurate, and complete information about unionization. Our role is simple. Provide facts. Answer questions. Be transparent about both the opportunities and the responsibilities that come with joining together in a union.
We believe strongly that bringing YEG into the existing WestJet union structure will strengthen the standard of living for airport workers across Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto. When workers bargain together, the outcome improves for everyone. This also aligns with the growing movement of more than 800 Contact Centre workers in Calgary and Crew Schedulers who are moving toward union representation. A united workforce has greater power to negotiate improvements that benefit all.
Transparency and factual information
Unifor has always shared information openly. We will continue to do so. There has been a noticeable increase in misinformation circulating at YEG. We want to address this directly and provide clear facts so that every worker can make an informed decision.
Classifications included in the proposed union structure
The following classifications would be included:
IC
DCC
CSA
GSL
GSL Relief
BSA
GSL-B
GSL-B Relief
Workforce Coordinators
These are the same core classifications that already exist within the union structure at other WestJet airports.
Facts about qualifications and working in multiple roles
There is misinformation being circulated suggesting that unionization would prevent workers from performing Lead or other qualified roles. This is not accurate. Here are the facts.
If you are qualified and trained in a role, you can continue to work in that role.
If you are cross trained and hold qualifications for multiple positions, you can pick up shifts in those roles.
If you are a dedicated CSA and become a dedicated GSL, you still retain your CSA qualifications and can pick up CSA shifts.
If you are a dedicated CSA and become dedicated DDC, you still retain CSA qualifications and can pick up CSA shifts.
Employees may hold two relief positions. For example, a dedicated CSA who is also qualified as relief DDC and relief IC can pick up shifts in all three positions.
The collective agreement language already in place across other WestJet unionized bases recognizes qualifications and allows workers to work in roles they are trained for. Unionization does not remove skills or qualifications. It protects how work is assigned and ensures fairness and transparency.
Why having YEG at the bargaining table matters
Decisions about wages, scheduling, premiums, and working conditions are negotiated. When YEG is not at the table, decisions are still made that affect you. Those standards are negotiated by workers in other bases and then applied when convenient.
Having YEG represented means Edmonton workers help shape the next agreement. It means local realities are heard and reflected in bargaining outcomes. It means improvements can be negotiated collectively instead of applied selectively.
When Edmonton joins with Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto, the result is stronger bargaining power and a higher standard across the system.
We are here to answer questions
Unifor is available to provide factual information and answer any questions you may have. This is your opportunity to speak directly with the union, review the collective agreement, and understand how representation works.
Every worker deserves accurate information. Every worker deserves a voice. Every worker deserves the opportunity to help shape the future of their workplace.
