Momentum is building at WestJet and Encore bases across the country as more and more workers look to Unifor for the solution to workplace challenges.

In union organizing drives, often the union is required to temporarily switch staffing levels to ensure enough resources are on hand to answer questions and provide clarity on the steps required to join the Union.

In Calgary this week, Unifor responded to an increased demand for resources with eight organizers in the airport working around the clock to meet these demands.

With more and more people seeking clarity about the union advantage while realizing that they need a real seat at the table with their employer to have a real voice in the workplace, Unifor has also been hosting “Open House” information sessions to support the organizing efforts of WestJet workers in Calgary.

The buzz about the Unifor has been circulating throughout the airport, with new contacts reaching out each day from WestJet Frontline, TAC and Call Centre workers.

Workers have been asking about such things as what it means to sign a union card (it means you’ve taken the first step to gaining a voice in the workplace), how soon they might get a first collective agreement (we will begin negotiations as soon as possible after more than 50 per cent of workers have signed a card and the labour board has certified Unifor as your union) and if Unifor has any political affiliations (No, we don’t’).
