A recent federal government announcement protecting the wages of airport workers when company contracts are flipped was the direct result of the hard work by Unifor speaking up for airport workers.

Unifor has been the leading voice for airport workers in Canada, pushing the federal government to extend wage protection to workers when contracts are flipped, and was on hand when Employment Minister Patricia Hajdu announced the change.

“Contract flipping at Canada’s airports, with the intent to lower working conditions, eats away at the foundation of good jobs in our country,” Unifor National President Jerry Dias said. The announcement “is a victory for our union that has been years in the making.”

Unifor has repeatedly highlighted the dangerous erosion of workers’ rights caused by contract flipping, working in conjunction with several other unions to oppose this tactic and demand better protection for airport workers. Unifor submitted a proposal to the federal government last January calling for wage protections and stronger successor rights for workers when contracts are flipped.

“Unifor members will keep up the pressure on federal politicians until this change is adopted as law,” said Euila Leonard, President of Unifor Local 2002, which represents airline workers across Canada. “Canada’s airport workers have long fought to be treated with dignity and respect, and we will not stop until these rights and more are enshrined in the labour code.”

Being part of a strong union means having a voice not only in your workplace, but also in the evolution of your industry.
